Welcome to Dark Between The Stars.

Dark Between The Stars is a MUSH set in the universe of Fading Suns, an award-winning tabletop role-playing game produced by Holistic Design. Set at the dawn of the sixth millenium, Fading Suns is a science fiction passion play, a story about humanity's grim fate - and bright hopes - among the stars. Central to the Fading Suns setting are themes like the Quest, mankind's relationship to the spiritual, the role of technology in society and the character of human nature.

The year is 4999 AD, one thousand years after the fall of the Second Republic, a universe-spanning society of technology and learning, and one thousand years after every star in the sky began to fade mysteriously, losing light for no apparent reason. The fading suns phenomenon ushered humanity into a New Dark Age, a time of feuding noble houses, church sects and guilds that mankind is only now hoping to emerge from. That hope comes in the form of Alexius I, the recently-crowned Emperor and victor of fifty years of war.

DBTS itself is set on Pandemonium, a frontier world on the edge of the Imperium. Just four years ago it was called Grange, the breadbasket of the Empire, but then disaster struck - a terrifying cataclysm that wracked the world as all but one of its terraforming engines shut down. The once idyllic agricultural world is now a wasteland, full of deserts and badlands with only one habital city, called the Hub.

At the same time that disaster struck a second jumpgate was discovered in the Pandemonium system. The jumpgates - mysterious artifacts left by the precursor Annunaki - are the only means for interstellar travel in Fading Suns. The discovery of a second jumpgate is unprecedented, and what's more the second gate seems only partially complete. Study of this new gate has lead to the discovery of a new world - Iver - inhabited by a heretical sect of the Church and an ancient noble family thought long destroyed.

Pandemonium, then, is the drama of Fading Suns in microcosm, full of the darkest intrigue over this new world and the meanest streets as a single city tries to support the population of a planet. But then, too, Pandemonium holds an inspiring hope in the form of its great mysteries, inspiring hardy souls to Quest after the answers and perhaps in the process redeem a troubled and fallen world.
